Mucus in the Urine

Small amounts of mucus are constantly secreted by mucous membrane epithelial cells. Small amounts of mucus are normally found in the urine of healthy individuals. Mucus in urine can make the urine appear cloudy.

One of the reasons for mucus in the urine is failing to perform proper genital hygiene prior to collecting a urine sample. This especially applies to women and their vaginal discharge.

Large amounts of mucus may be an indicator of an infection or inflammation of the urinary tract if other symptoms are found. An urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most widespread causes of mucus in urine. Another common type of infection causing mucus in the urine is either gonorrhea of chlamydia. Also mucus in the urine can be associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), kidney stones, urachal (bladder) cancer, ulcerative colitis.
