Chemistry panels (Biochemistry profile) are groups of tests that help to measure various chemicals and enzymes (proteins) in the blood to provide general information about the health and functioning of the organs (especially the liver, kidneys, and pancreas).

The most common biochemical blood tests are:

  • Hepatic/liver profile (Liver Function Tests (LFT), ) – blood tests that give information about the state of the liver: alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, GGTP), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bilirubin: total, direct (bound, conjugated) and indirect (free, unconjugated).
  • Kidney profile (Kidney Function Tests or Renal Panel) – a group of tests that can help identify problems with the kidneys: creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN).
  • Pancreas profile (Pancreas Function Tests) – the test measures the levels of enzymes produced by the pancreas: amylase, lipase.
  • Iron profile: iron, ferritin, transferrin, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC).
  • Electrolyte panel: potassium, bicarbonate, sodium, chloride
  • Other indicators: total protein, glucose, albumin, cholesterol
